Use small sturdy boxes for books, keep each box at a liftable weight and fill empty space so books cannot shift. Put heavy books low and move to another box before one container becomes difficult to carry safely.
Label at least two sides with destination room plus a short contents description, then mark priority boxes such as first-night, fragile or open-first. A simple numbering system can link boxes to a phone note or spreadsheet.
Protect the screen with a soft non-abrasive layer, add rigid corner and face protection and keep the TV upright during transport. Do not place heavy boxes against the screen.
Build a five-day carry-on around a small color-matched clothing capsule, one extra layer, travel-size liquids and shoes that work with multiple outfits. Wear the bulkiest items in transit instead of packing them.
Use a mix of free sturdy boxes from local businesses or community groups and purchased boxes for fragile, heavy or specialty items. Avoid weak produce boxes for books or dishes and inspect reused boxes for moisture or pests.
Use a room name plus a short contents label on the top and at least one side. Add a simple priority code such as OPEN FIRST, NORMAL or STORAGE so boxes are easy to route without reading every line.
For one person, a realistic packing window is often 1–3 focused days if clutter is moderate and supplies are ready. A heavily furnished apartment, paperwork, books or last-minute sorting can extend that substantially.
Use clean towels, packing paper, dishcloths or unprinted paper to wrap each piece, then pack plates vertically with cushioning on all sides. Avoid loose space that lets dishes strike each other.
A rough starting range is 60–100 boxes for a typical 3-bedroom home, but minimal households may use far fewer and long-term households far more. Inventory closets, books, kitchenware and garage storage before buying.
A 15–17 foot truck is a common starting point for many 2-bedroom apartments, but furniture size and how fully the home is furnished matter more than the bedroom count. Compare the rental company’s cubic-foot guidance.
